BTU is essentially a measurement of the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. Natural Gas is billed by the Therm, thus 1 Therm equals 100,000 BTU's. 1 Therm of Natural Gas is equal to 0.714 gallons of heating oil. 1 gallon of home heating oil equals 140,000 BTU. So 1 gallon of heating oil equals 1.4 Therms of natural gas. Essentially by utilizing heating oil to heat your home you get twice the amount of energy per billable unit than you would if you utilize natural gas.
